Wastewater Upgrade - Coward Street Mascot

153 Coward Street to 206 Coward Street, Mascot

Click here to view the community newsletter

We are upgrading large wastewater pipe along Coward Street, Mascot.

We have completed the investigations along Coward St in preparation for construction in mid-2023. Before we start, we are going to be demolishing and old, vacant building within the Sydney Water pump station at 153 Coward Street. This project will significantly reduce the risk of wastewater overflows

    Project timing: 28 August 2023 to November/December 2023.

UPDATE: Demobilisation has been delayed. This was due to a fault noticed in the sewer junction connection points. The supplier has been called to site to assess and repair the issue. We had to stop work restoring the road and reconnecting the live sewer as there was high risk of wastewater overflow.

08 MARCH 2024: We have removed the fencing from Aloha Street - normal traffic has returned to this area. We plan to disestablish the west end compound near O'Riordan Street in mid-April 2024. We apologise for the delay at this end of Coward Street.

Update: On Friday 8 December 2023, we'll begin the pack down of traffic control and site compound near Aloha STreet/Coward Street. Two way traffic is expected to start back on Tuesday 12 December 2023.

Update: Night work, weekend work and extended hours

We have now reached a critical stage in our project (stage 4 - see below) where we need work as quickly as possible to prevent the underground pit in which the pipe is being placed, from collapsing. This means we will be working earlier than usual, at night and across certain weekends in October 2023. We know this isn’t ideal, but we will do our best to minimise noise and impacts.

Please see the calendar below for the schedule of work:

Click here to view the community update about extended working hours in October 2023

Community contact: 1800 006 113 (option 2) If you call outside of work hours, please leave a return phone number.

    Construction work involves:

    • Stage 1: site establishment and set up of HDD rig entry pit on the road in front of 151 Coward Street
    • Stage 2: drilling underground from 151 Coward Street through to 206 Coward Street
    • Stage 3: site establishment and set up HDD rig exit pit on the road in front of 206 Coward Street
    • Stage 4: welding and installing the new pipe
    • Stage 5: restoration of roadway and all impacted areas.

    What you need to know:

We will be drilling underground using a Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) rig. This will be set up on the road along the alignment of the wastewater pipe. Traffic will be changed temporarily to allow for two way traffic movement while we work.

Our machinery can be noisy and our set up will disrupt usual traffic while were on the road - we have all mitigation measures in place to ensure we minimise impacts on the community and complete the project as quick as we can.

Some of this work needs to be done at night due to wastewater flow levels. We know this is not ideal, but we’ll do everything we can to keep noise to a minimum.

Work hours: 7 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday. 8 am to 1 pm Saturdays (if required) No work planned on Public Holidays.

Night work hours: 7 pm to 5 am
